How we researched this

We compared manufacturer specifications and US listings from the DJI Store, a third-party DJI reseller, Potensic and HOVERAir between October 23 and 27, 2026, plus FAA and FCC guidance. We haven’t flown these drones ourselves. See our disclosure.

Why 250 grams matters

If you fly only for fun, a drone that weighs less than 250 g (0.55 lb) at takeoff doesn’t need FAA registration, and so doesn’t need Remote ID (FAA). You still need the free TRUST certificate and must follow all recreational rules. Two catches:

  • Part 107 pilots must register every drone, whatever its weight.
  • Accessories count. Larger “Plus” batteries, guards or mounts can push a mini drone over 250 g.

Sources: DJI Neo, Mini 3, Flip, Mini 4 Pro, DJI USA Store (third-party reseller), Potensic Atom 2, HOVERAir.

Quick picks

  • Best value camera drone: DJI Mini 3 if in stock; otherwise Potensic Atom 2 or DJI Mini 4K.
  • Best safety features: DJI Mini 4 Pro (omnidirectional sensing) or DJI Flip (full prop guards).
  • Smallest: DJI Neo or HOVERAir X1 Pro for hands-free selfies.
  • Best image quality: DJI Mini 5 Pro’s 1-inch sensor, but it’s only available through third-party sellers in the US, which can complicate warranty (DroneDJ).

Downsides of tiny drones

  • Less stable in strong wind than heavier drones.
  • Harder to see at distance, which matters for the line-of-sight rule.
  • Smaller batteries mean shorter flights for selfie drones.

Availability in 2026

Since December 22, 2025, new foreign-made drone models can’t get FCC authorization; previously authorized ones can still be sold and flown (FCC FAQ). Expect limited stock and buy from authorized sellers where possible.
